Konopiště Open 2018 – First Round Recap

The buzz started around the Konopiště Open tournament center early in the morning. It looked like a nice and sunny day, but then it seemed it is going to rain all day. The wind picked up and dark clouds gathered in the skies over the scenic Konopiště castle park. Luckily there was no rain at all.

143 players actually started the event, because one player got hurt after the player’s meeting. Groups were randomly divided throughout the whole day, starting from 8.00 to 14.00.

World Champ In the Early Lead

2009 World Champion Avery Jenkins got into the lead early in the morning with his -11 56 thanks to his on point green hit percentage. He managed to navigate through the course without any bogeys and with eleven birdies. It seems that those long and wide fairways of Franz Ferdinand really suit his game.

Europeans making their move

Seppo Paju, the 2014 European Champion actually had an even better green hit percentage, actually number 1 of the round. He managed to get 11 birdies, 1 eagle and an unfortunate bogey. He overtook AJ on the scoreboard and was shining on top for a while.

Enter Eagle

We first noticed that things are happening when Eagle McMahon handed in his scorecard with one par after 10 holes, sitting at -9, third place. Basically after only half the holes. Our social media specialist ran across the (very big) Konopiště castle park to catch as much as possible. To watch Eagle making history. He only witnessed one other par and McMahon turned in a scorecard with a breathtaking score of 51 (-16). New course record.

More European players raise to the top for tomorrow’s lead card

Simon Lizotte starting at 14.00 played an also outstanding score of -14, topping all players except his winged team mate from USA. They will be accompanied by the crowd favorite Karl Johan Nybo from Denmark with -12 and Seppo Paju also with -12.

America leading in both divisions

Catrina Allen, 2014 World Champion made what she needed to do to raise to the top of this year’s Konopiště Open FPO division. Eveliina Salonen and Kristin Tattar are both in striking distance, just 2 and 3 strokes behind the leader.

Czech players with a slow start

There are 11 players from the Czech Republic playing the tournament, six of them are strong young guns with a great potential. Unfortunately all of them had a slow start with the best ones (Lukáš Filandr and Jakub Zdráhal) sitting at -3, 51st place.
