Konopiště Open is oficially in the books and we bring you a short review of the final round. Today was for sure the best of all the days we spent here at Konopiště. World’s best players combined with beautiful and sunny weather lured many spectators to the Konopiště castle park. It all ends this evening, though. The very biggest disc golf event of Czech disc golf history is over. Our hard working crew arrived in the end of June and is not leaving just yet.
McMahon did not risk anything
Eagle McMahon kept his lead and easily became the winner of 2018 Konopiště Open. Even though Simon Lizotte and Paul McBeth did everything they could, Eagle had such a big margin from round 1 and 2 that a -12 was more than enough to win the tournament, 5 strokes in front of Simon Lizotte. He started out slow, the pressure of a Major event’s final round might have come in play. Nevertheless, he found his groove and started a series of 8 birdies in a row. His victory is mostly thanks to an incomprehensible inside the circle putting percentage of 98% and a huge green hit percentage. Eagle won his first Major event ever!
Lizotte tries to set a new course record
Lizotte’s game was beautiful to look at from the very beginning. Even though he was not happy with all his throws, he played birdies on most of them. He was trying to get one more on hole 18, sitting at -16, but did not convert his outside the circle putt. He only tied the record previously set by his Discmania team mate Eagle McMahon. As usual, he used the distance and putting inside the circle to his advantage.
McBeth on the hunt
After the third round, when the 4 time World Champion found some trouble on hole 1 and dropped himself to the chase card. In the final round, he turned on the beast mode and began closing in. With a total of 14 birdies and no bogeys, he carded -14 and got himself to the bronze spot.
Eveliina Salonen held tight on her lead, winning by one stroke
Henna Blomroos was on fire both in the 3rd and 4th round carding -3 in both. It was not quite enough to catch the fantastic Finnish phenom Eveliina Salonen, who defended her lead by one stroke. It is easy to tell that Eveliina is not that young trembling girl but a self-confident female player nowadays. Watch her play was breathtaking. Catrina Allen ended up third.
Lukáš Filandr is the best Czech player of 2018 Konopiště Open
Only two Czechs got through the cut – 4 time junior Czech Champion Jakub Knápek and 5 time open Czech Champion Lukáš Filandr. Lukáš was leading by one stroke over Jakub, but he played way better in the final round, carding -5 when Jakub played +1. The fact that Czech players got through a Major event’s cut alone means that Czech disc golf is on a rise and we expect many more accomplishments of our players.
